What is the difference between Alcantara and suede?

Image

At first glance, Alcantara and suede are strikingly similar 👀 – both feel soft, look classy, and are often used for car seats, furniture, or fashion accessories. But despite their visual similarity, there are fundamental differences that you should be aware of before choosing one over the other.

Origin and composition

Suede comes from the subcutaneous tissue of animals, usually pigs or deer, and is sanded after tanning to achieve its characteristic velvety surface. It is therefore a truly natural product with individual structures and characteristics. Alcantara, on the other hand, is a purely synthetic material developed in Japan in the 1970s. It is based on microfibers made of polyester and polyurethane, which are processed under high pressure and heat.

This artificial production not only ensures a uniform appearance but also better control over the material's properties. While suede is naturally sensitive to moisture, Alcantara is significantly more resistant.

Both materials feel pleasantly soft, but Alcantara often has an even more velvety and even texture. Unlike suede, which is sensitive to dirt, oil, or water, Alcantara is easier to clean – a slightly damp cloth or special microfiber cleaner is usually sufficient. Suede, on the other hand, requires special brushes and protective sprays to keep it looking its best.

Especially in the automotive and furniture sectors, Alcantara scores points for its ease of care and durability – two points where suede reaches its limits more quickly.

Optical differences

Although Alcantara and suede look similar, Alcantara differs in its precise, industrial uniformity. With suede, small irregularities, scars, or color variations are part of its natural charm. Alcantara, on the other hand, exhibits a modern, uniform finish that's especially sought after in minimalist interiors.

Two materials – two worlds

Alcantara and suede are similar in appearance, but differ significantly in origin, care, and everyday suitability. Those who value natural origins and a traditional look should opt for suede. Those who prefer easy care, modern technology, and vegan materials should opt for Alcantara 🌱.
